a space for stillness

‘A Space for Stillness’ is a proposal for an outdoor sitting area consisting of a one-person bench surrounded by an amphitheatre of mirrors. The project was idealized between 2018 and 2019 for the ‘Rethinking Bauhaus project’, a one-year collaboration between the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, the Royal Academy of The Hague and the Stedelijk Museum (AMS).

The installation is ideally to be placed in the middle of the movement of a city. While walking around it, the mirrors reflect and shift the surrounding movement. Only when one chooses to engage with the work by sitting on the bench, one's own reflection disappears, and the mirrors reveal a landscape of skies. Each mirror will then capture a small portion of our wide roof, giving a frame for contemplating it’s intrinsically magical content. These images come from a 1:4 scale model of the project.
